Come Out Fighting

Neck, competing with hordes of bands in the wake of the Celtic- Punk-Folk popular rise of recent years thanks to prominent bands like the Dropkick Murphy’s and Flogging Molly and of course The Pogues of the yesteryear, have deservedly avoided the branding so many copycats have endured thanks in the main to Leeson O’Keeffe (Ex…

Fight Back

Fight Back

The second full length from the Newport based four piece doesn’t shy away from their obvious influences in The Clash and period peers such as Time again/ The Unseen etc. This is an album packed full of anthem lung busting and rousing songs, which is trying to capture the sign of these frustrating times and…

Buttsweat and Tears EP

Buttsweat and Tears EP

This five track EP from Chicago’s finest three piece is a great EP (perhaps my favourite of the year) and carries on from where “Oh Calcutta!” left off really. The album sleeve is typical Larry Arms humour, emphasised by Brendan Kelly’s blog for those who want to read more of what I mean. There are…

The Drellas + The Dead Class + Project

Islington Bar Academy
London, UK
Thursday 22 October 2009
I have been pushed for a while to check out The Dead Class and hence my reason for the gig at the Bar Academy in North London. There is a sparse crowd and after garnering some information from the tour manager for the Anti Pop Tour 2009  I…

Sonic Boom Six + Skints + Sounds of Swami

The Cockpit
Leeds, UK
11 October 2009
Tonight’s gig promises a punk- ska- reggae- hip hop infusion.  To kick-start the night, Keighley quartet Sounds of Swami launch into a tirade of loud, riffy tracks, the length of each around two minutes.  As a last minute addition to the bill, the ‘Swami boys still give a blinding performance…

Purple Turtle
London, UK
Monday 19 October 2009
I have not been to the Purple Turtle for a while, which is a pity cos I realize its one of my preferred venues in London, a city which is in desperate need of better venues in my opinion. The size, not too big not too small, layout and…

After 20 hours of planes and taxis,  I arrived at Zepp Tokyo. The place was heaving with the excitement and expectation of the kings of punk taking the stage. First on where the Japanese punksters SA and with thier heavy blend of punk and Oi! they  riled the crowd up, taking excitement…

Part two of the Anitdote Tour’s London stop off takes place the following night at the Eastpak store, tucked away in Carnaby Street in the heart of the West End.

This year the The Eastpak Antidote Tour takes four bands across Europe during October and November and made a two night pit-stop in London, beginning with the main event at The Forum.

The Grit + Sorry And The Sinatras + The Loyalties + The Adjusters

The Grit + Sorry And The Sinatras + The Loyalties + The Adjusters

The Underworld
Camden- London, UK
Thursday October 15th 2009
Another school night and sadly another London show which starts with a small crowd despite the promising line-up. The Adjusters, a four piece from Wigan start off a bit subdued probably because what crowd there was were “London reserved” but the band soon livened up. Their 70’s influenced rock…

Slicing Through The BS: The Cut Ups

Slicing Through The BS: The Cut Ups

Is punk rock losing its ability to make social change. Is style dominating substance? Exeter based The Cut Ups have come out of their own wilderness to produce one of my favorite records of the year “High and Mighty”. Deep thinking and philosophizing front man Jon Curtis was kind enough to wax lyrical on the…

Cocksparrer + Cockroach Clan + The Whalers

Cocksparrer + Cockroach Clan + The Whalers

Parkteatret
Oslo, Norway
Saturday 1st August 2009
This show would mark Cocksparrer’s Norwegian debut, and what an amazing gig it was. The whole evening was a glorious celebration of Oi! with the small venue filled to capacity.
Up first were Olso’s own Oi! heroes, The Whalers, and they quickly set the tone for the evening with their great set….

Gritty Bastards!: The Grit

Gritty Bastards!: The Grit

With the great hype surrounding rockabilly and psycho a couple years ago, things have waned slightly in the genre. However throughout the ups and downs The Grit have been steadily growing a fan base appreciative of their diverse rockabilly, soulful and rocking sounds. With the release of their second album a couple months ago “Straight…

      Killer CD

(NEW YORK, NY)—Already featured in CMJ’s Top 30 on WUTK-FM in Knoxville and hailed by The Paisley Umbrella as “essential Spring/Summer listening,” and “funny and optimistic, with melodies and choruses that just don’t quit,” by DFFD, The LP is Dead, the new CD from JP “Thunderbolt” Patterson, is becoming one of the most talked-about releases of the year.
