Taqwacore at Meltdown- The Kominas +Al-Thawra + Fun-Da-Mental +Poetic Pilgrimage + Michael Muhammad Knight

Queen Elizabeth Hall – South Bank Centre
London, UK
Saturday 19 June 2010
For those not heading out to a field (or even just a park) for their musical festival experience, summer in London still offers up the annual Meltdown Festival. For those unfamiliar with the event, Meltdown is held within the sprawling concrete jungle that is the…

Iggy And The Stooges

Iggy And The Stooges

Iggy And The Stooges
Hammersmith Apollo
London, UK
Monday 3rd May 2010
Iggy Pop runs onto the stage of Hammersmith Apollo with the energy of a man barely a third of his age. His 60-something, pensioner-defying, rabid stage presence and showmanship from the opening track to the finale is something to behold.
Iggy is back with The Stooges to…

New York Dolls + Urban Voodoo Machine

New York Dolls + Urban Voodoo Machine

The HMV Forum
London, UK
Friday 4th December 2009
I first heard of the Urban Voodoo Machine a year ago, when I asked Vic Ruggiero (of The Slackers) what current bands he recommended, fully anticipating/hoping to be directed to some obscure New York underground act. Instead he sang the praises of this unusual, boundary-defying act from London’s Dalston….

Anti-Flag Instore – The Clash Covers Set

Eastpak Store
Carnaby Street, London.
15 October 2009
Part two of the Anitdote Tour’s London stop off takes place the following night at the Eastpak store, tucked away in Carnaby Street in the heart of the West End.
The front of the shop is transformed into a tiny, make-shift gig venue – has anyone seen Anti-Flag play a…

Alexisonfire + Anti-Flag + Four Year Strong + Ghost Of A Thousand

The Forum
London
14 October 2009
This year the The Eastpak Antidote Tour takes four bands across Europe during October and November and made a two night pit-stop in London, beginning with the main event at The Forum.
Ghost of a Thousand have the right idea about handling  the opening band slot on a four act bill. They kick…

Reagan Youth + Moral Dilemma +Trash Talk + Section 13

The Underworld
London, UK
23 August 2009
I only catch the last two songs from Midlands-based four-piece Section 13, though one is a Bad Brains cover, indicating one of their key influences.
Trash Talk from California follow a much darker, metal theme but are great value for money when it comes to entertainment, with their long-haired, ultra energetic…

Squirtgun + The Zatopeks + Company L

26 July 09
The Underworld,
London, UK
Sunday night shows at Camden’s Underworld can be a little on the sparse side in terms of crowd numbers and tonight is no exception. So the fact that two of the original five bands have pulled out is, in some ways a blessing, giving a later start time – and so…

Madstock 2009

Madstock 2009

17 July 2009
Victoria Park
London , UK
Arriving at Victoria Park it’s quickly obvious that Madstock draws a pleasingly diverse crowd – young, old, punks, ska fans and a worryingly high number of people prepared to dress up as characters from Madness videos. It takes all sorts to celebrate the 30th anniversary of one of London’s…

The Drummer from The Renowned NYC
Group The Dictators Announces His Latest
      Killer CD

(NEW YORK, NY)—Already featured in CMJ’s Top 30 on WUTK-FM in Knoxville and hailed by The Paisley Umbrella as “essential Spring/Summer listening,” and “funny and optimistic, with melodies and choruses that just don’t quit,” by DFFD, The LP is Dead, the new CD from JP “Thunderbolt” Patterson, is becoming one of the most talked-about releases of the year. Most recently, JP graced the cover of Drumhead Magazine, became a featured Vic Firth artist, and played an incendiary show, backed by Dave Bone & The Troublemakers, at this year’s SXSW in Austin. Renowned for his mighty, muscular rhythms, JP has been the drummer for NYC Punk legends The Dictators for 16 years and a founding member of Manitobas Wild Kingdom. Already an icon on New York’s Punk scene, JP has also been a seminal member of such diverse groups as The Voluptuous Horror of Karen Black and the Patt…
