American Rubicon
After having seen them play a few months back for the first time, I really wanted to like this record, but I find myself slightly frustrated with it overall. Maybe it’s only good but I wanted it to be great?
Cobra Skulls are a band that are unique in talent of their genre crossing styles, predominantly rockabilly, but a hefty dose of folk and throw in the bilingual Argentinean vocalist singing in English and Spanish and the mix of themes ranging from love, politics, wars, social upbringing etc and maybe what you have is a band trying to do too much?
The strengths definitely lie in their intelligent songs and lyrics as well as the ease with which they master their instruments with personal favourites “Muniphobia”, “Overpopulated”, “HDUI”, “Timing” amongst others. The record covers 17 songs in less than 40 minutes resulting in a pretty engaging album.
The vocal range of Devin Peralta also compliments their diverse approach to tackling so many types of sounds, seamlessly straying from straight up punk to rockabilly and then folk.
Actually based on my own evidence, maybe it is a great album and I’m just disillusioned?
