Satan’s Hollow
Manchester,UK
Thursday 10th June 2010

As far as I was aware, tonight’s gig at Satan’s Hollow was to be one man YouTube sensation Kunt and The Gang, with no supports.  But as we are waiting for him to take to the stage, we are instead introduced to MC Rohpypnol and Handsome Dan, two rappers backed only by their Ipod and the resident DJ who doesn’t always manage to start the right tracks in time.  I think anyone in the audience would be forgiven for thinking that they were a comedy duo, but then I was left with the slightly awkward feeling that they were in fact taking it quiet seriously.  They remind me of a cross between Devo and Goldie Lookin’ Chain, not shying away from the typical subjects of taking the day off work to sit around and smoking weed.  The crowd seem mesmerised throughout their set, but whether that’s due to their enjoyment or confusion I’m not too sure.  Ending with an undistinguishable song to the tune of 50 Cent’s ‘Candy Shop’, it’s almost a relief when they shut down their Ipod and call it a night.

Dressed in a florescent yellow jumpsuit and trademark dirty blonde wig, Kunt and his nonexistent gang follow suit with his own mp3 player of backing tracks, and picks the thoroughly romantically titled “I’m Gonna Lick You Out” for his opening number.  An inventive lyricist, his rhymes aren’t always particularly original, and yet they get smarter and more interesting with each progressing song.  A standup comedian as much as he is a musician, I’m not even entirely sure if the backing tracks are his own, but they are certainly catchy and fun to listen to.  Throughout the night, we bear witness to tunes such as “A Gentleman’s Wash”, “Chips or Tits” and “Man With A Beard”. To say he precariously hovers around the line of obscenity is an understatement; he has taken the line and seems to have experimented with just how much further he can cross it, not least with “Fred and Rose”, and it doesn’t take a genius to work out the style or subject matter of that particular ditty.  Finishing the first half of his set with his most popular YouTube hit “Carol Vorderman”, and then a reggae style one about Countdowns new lady “Rachel Riley”, he surprises us all with the little toy cock that

pops out from the fly of his jumpsuit. After a half hour break, he returns with his sidekick ‘Little Kunt‘, a hand puppet with the same jumpsuit, miniature cock and stick-on mask of Kunt’s face, together they duet about what they’d do for a million pounds.  Ending with “Wanking Over A Polaroid Picture Of An Ex Girlfriend Who Died”, which admittedly made a few members of the crowd, myself included, cringe a little.

For those of you who are easily offended by crass and obscene lyrics, don’t go see Kunt And The Gang.  But if you find cleverly written toilet humour the perfect tonic to a night out, get online to see when he’s next at a venue near you.
